History tells us that Cape Town was discovered by Bartholomew Diaz, a Portuguese explorer, who landed at the Cape in 1488, and promptly named it “Cape Of Good Hope”. It became one of the major trade routes of the world that was developed by the Dutch settlers in the 17th century for Dutch ships that sailed to Eastern Africa, India, and the Far East more than 200 years before the construction of the Suez Canal in 1869. Up to now, the influence of the Dutch is still obvious in the form of Afrikaans language, which was developed and became the official language spoken and studied in South Africa.
